Breaking the 80-Point Barrier: A New Era for Chumphon Robusta

For decades, the global coffee industry has treated Robusta as a background character—a high-caffeine, low-cost filler used to add crema to espresso blends or to manufacture instant coffee.

But the narrative is shifting, and the epicenter of that shift is right here in Southern Thailand.

We recently took our latest harvest from Lamae to the regional Chumphon Robusta competition, putting our yield up against some of the most dedicated farmers in the province. We are incredibly proud to announce that our micro-lot officially broke the 80-point threshold, officially classifying it as Fine Robusta.

What an 80+ Score Actually Means

In the specialty coffee grading system, hitting 80 points is the holy grail. It is the exact line where a coffee transitions from a "commercial commodity" to a "specialty-grade" product.

Achieving this score means the Q-Graders (certified coffee tasters) found zero physical defects in our green beans and zero off-flavors in the cup. Instead of the harsh, rubbery bitterness historically associated with commercial Robusta, an 80+ Fine Robusta reveals the true terroir of Lamae.

The cupping table revealed a radically different profile: a heavy, syrupy body, dominant notes of rich dark chocolate, roasted praline, and the subtle, sweet complexity of local tropical fruits like jackfruit. It is a clean, intentional, and highly refined cup of coffee.

Proof of Concept

Scoring 80+ is not an accident. It is the direct result of obsessive agronomy and meticulous post-harvest processing. It requires selectively hand-picking only the ripest cherries, controlling fermentation environments, and managing slow, even drying times on raised beds.

This score proves that the terroir at 9°N, 98°E is world-class. It proves that our agricultural blueprint works.

From One Farm to an Entire Ecosystem

Creating one exceptional micro-lot is a massive milestone, but it is only the first step. The true mission of Nine North Lake is not just to elevate our own farm, but to elevate our entire local community.

Through the upcoming Terra9 App and our physical preprocessing hub, we will be able to guide neighboring Lamae farmers through these exact same award-winning protocols. By acting as the central hub, we can process our partners' cherries to these strict 80+ standards, giving them access to the premium global market and drastically increasing their household income.
